Ah, the first Questionable Tales comic--seems like eons ago, huh? Well, since I actually drew it during the Summer of '98, it seems alot longer to me. For new readers and those who care, here's a little bit of the history and philosophy behind Q.T.
Since I can remember I've loved comics and wanted to do one at some point in my life. But at the ripe old age of 16, I was completely disillusioned with comics in general. I hadn't yet discovered alternative/underground comics, so I felt my hatred for Marmaduke and Garfield was mine alone. My only inspiration was Space Moose, the only webcomic I'd read at the time, and that only for showing me that there are no rules in comics if you don't want them.
So, having no other inspirations to draw from (well, Krazy Kat, but that only for the artwork) I decided I would do a comic with no punchlines, no jokes, no catch phrases, no alot of things. I had NO idea what would replace it, except I knew I wanted to swear and include drugs and be outrageous, but I knew the only thing to do would be to jump right in and see where this new approach led me. Another peculiar thing I decided to do was to not pencil in roughs--just draw it, and if it came out bad, oh well. This I felt, and still feel, adds a wonderful sense of energy and spontaneity to it. It was almost two years before I gave that up because I didn't feel it fit with the stories anymore.
This was the foundation Q.T. was built on, and it's gotten much better since. With this shit in mind, go ahead and delve into the terrible world of Questionable Tales.
